The selection of filter materials and processes depends on the properties of filter media, including chemical stability, temperature resistance, pressure resistance, corrosion resistance and filtration precision.

Common Filter Media and Their Application Scenarios

Woven Materials

Filter cloth and screens woven from natural/synthetic fibers, metal wires, etc., are widely adopted filter media in industrial production. Cost-effective, easy to clean and replace, they can trap particles with a minimum particle size ranging from 5 to 65 micrometers.

Porous Solids

This category covers ceramics, sintered metal or glass, and porous plastic tubes bonded with fine plastic powder. Capable of capturing particles as small as 1 to 3 micrometers, they are mainly used for suspensions containing a small amount of fine particles.

Packed Media

Granular materials such as sand, gravel, activated carbon and diatomaceous earth, or stacked non-woven fibers like glass wool. They are generally applied to suspensions with extremely low solid content, such as municipal water supply systems and sugar liquid to be purified.

Polymeric Porous Membranes

Designed for filtering ultra-fine particles to achieve highly clarified liquid. Membranes that filter particles of 0.1–1 μm are defined as microfiltration membranes; those for 0.01–0.1 μm particles are ultrafiltration membranes.

Filter Materials & Processes Under Different Pressures

The selection varies under different pressure conditions. Filter materials deployed in high-pressure environments must feature superior mechanical strength and pressure resistance. For high-pressure filtration, metal screens or specially reinforced synthetic fiber filter cloths are commonly adopted.

Filter Materials & Processes Under Different Temperatures

Temperature exerts a remarkable impact on material selection. Filters for high-temperature service require outstanding heat resistance to prevent deformation or damage under thermal conditions, such as ceramic membranes or specific synthetic resin membranes.

Besides temperature, comprehensive evaluation shall cover chemical stability, corrosion resistance and filtration precision. When handling acidic, alkaline or organic solvent media, only filter materials resistant to corresponding chemical erosion can be selected.
